About The Contest
|
How did the Contest get started?
- Sir John Templeton initiated the Laws of Life Essay Contest to encourage young people to reflect and write about their own laws of life. Mr. Templeton is a world-renowned investment manager.
|
What are the Laws of Life?
- The Laws of Life are a set of rules, ideals, and principles by which one should live. Literally hundreds of such laws exist - some are so clear that almost all people can agree that these laws are true. For instance, honesty and compassion rank high as values in all cultures and societies. If practiced by everyone, these laws of life would benefit us all and improve the world in which we live.
|
Who sponsors a Laws of Life Essay Contest?
- Each Contest is sponsored by an individual or organization concerned with the character development of young people. In some communities a business leader may hear about the Contest and begin working with the local school district; in other cases, a concerned parent or teacher may "champion" the project and persuade a community organization to get involved. The Contest Sponsor provides the funding for the cash prizes or scholarships that are awarded to the prize-winning students.
|
What does the Contest involve?
- Though no two Contest are exactly alike, there are several common components:
- Students learn about the Contest from their teaches.
- Teachers encourage their students to submit essays.
- Impartial (and anonymous) judges from the community read and rank the essays.
- Prize winners are first announced at an Awards Banquet.
|
Who is vital to the success of the Contest?
- TEACHERS! Time and time again, Contest Sponsors talk about how important it is for teachers to believe in the ideals and benefits of the Contest. Sponsors report that in schools where classroom teachers encourage (and even prod!) their students to write an essay, the number of essays submitted dramatically increases. Each year, dedicated teachers involved in the Essay Contest are publicly recognized for the support and encouragement they give to their students.
|
What is the Contest really about?
- The Laws of Life Essay Contest invites young people to express in their own words what they value most in life. The Contest is also designed to help teachers and principals improve the "moral ethos" of their classrooms and schools.
